SACRED HISTORY for May 1st

1983   The Dreaded Gom-Boo published

1987  Adi Da Samraj Gathers with devotees and “Considers” the practical discipline of service.

His Divine Presence, Parama-Sapta-Na Adi Da, Says:

“There is a fundamental obligation on the part of My devotees to exercise themselves through practical service, and to choose service that makes use of capabilities that you (indeed) have, and for which you prepare yourself in whatever way your particular service requires you to be prepared.

And then you must function through service in love, with free energy–truly serve others, not bind others, not disturb others, but truly serve them through your service.

Your service should not be full of reactive emotion and communication of ‘problems’, then. It should express itself through real competence, true equanimity, and Spiritual expression made appropriate to your level of practice, with human energy positively expressed. You should handle your end. Your part of it all is your responsibility. You should do so with clarity and good humor. And be ‘good company’.

Then, also, relative to how much time you spend in service, you must economize your energies relative to all your obligations. You have many obligations relative to spending time in meditation, time in devotional activities, time in study, or a variety of forms of devotional and cultural participation. You have obligations relative to personal practices, such as dietary practice or exercise, and so on. And you have obligations relative to service. So, you must fulfill all of these obligations regularly. Most of them are done every day. That means you have to economize your energy and attention relative to each kind of obligation or opportunity.

So, you cannot be a ‘workaholic’ then, so-called. You cannot just exhaust yourself in your service life and feel that that is being Spiritual somehow, that it is so-called ‘karma yoga’, or whatever. It is not.

Karma Yoga is not exhausting yourself through ‘good works’. Karma Yoga, truly done, is another form of Divine Communion. It is just right service to the Divine, to Me. And it is supposed to be part of a total life of ‘radical’ devotion to Me and right-life obedience to Me. So you must economize the amount of time you spend in your service obligation. And knowing how much time you have available for that, you must see to it that you get your work done, and not be wasting energy and attention in your service, but be concentrated and effective. Handle that business, and then, having handled it, you are free to meditate or participate in other activities. And you will not be exhausted, having truly served Me.”  ~Adi Da Samrajashram
