Spiritual Realization Requires A Spiritual Master

1978 Adi Da Samraj Writes the Essay “How to Make Right Use of the Company of the Spiritual Master”, which is later published in The Enlightenment of the Whole Body.

His Divine Presence Parama-Sapta-Na Adi Da Writes:

“Casual association with the Spiritual Master not only makes the individual waste the opportunity for Awakening, Transformation, and Enlightenment that is possible in such Company, but it can actually serve the development of illusions and unnecessary difficulties.

There is a Transcendental Life-Power Radiating from the Spiritual Master to Infinity. If you approach in love and surrender, and if you approach only in a right and fitting manner, when the Spiritual Master invites or permits you, then the Power of Real God is brought to your Aid.

But if you approach boldly, full of ‘self’, armored against all Help, or if you indulge yourself in that Company, exploiting the intimacy of the Spiritual Master the way a spoiled child exploits a parent, then your ego-possession is likely to be magnified, and your limitations exaggerated.

The Company of the Spiritual Master should be taken in small, occasional doses, and increased gradually as maturity develops. It is true that proximity to the Radiant Fire of the Spiritual Master can stimulate changes in you, and even produce temporary exaltation and highly advanced ‘experiential’ phenomena of a Yogic or mystical kind. But you cannot bypass your own trial of growth. You must, in any case, fulfill all conditions of practice, adaptation, purification, growth, maturity, and ultimate transformation.

The Spiritual Master can quicken individuals, but he or she cannot relieve anyone of any essential responsibility.

Therefore, you should approach the Spiritual Master with full devotional surrender, then go and practice and grow for a time in the community of devotees, then return for more, and so forth. You must truly use the quickening Influence for the sake of growth, rather than for the sake of temporary, fascinating effects. The effects pass quickly, but illusions remain for long.

The Divine Power is intended to give Life to your responsible practice, not to fascinate and console you in your ego-possessed struggle against the Divine and the sacrifice for which all are born. For these reasons, only the true devotee truly receives Grace in the Company of the Spiritual Master, while others are only deepened in their degenerative or deluded commitment to separate ‘self’.” ~Muliwai, Oahu, Hawaii
