1978   What to Remember to Be Happy (later Re-Written by Adi Da Samraj and Re-Named What, Where, When, How, Why, and Who To Remember To Be Happy) is first published

1997  Adi Da Samraj Gathers with devotees and “Considers” the necessity to set aside the verbal mind in order to engage the in-depth process in devotional Communion with Him.

His Divine Presence Parama-Sapta-Na Adi Da Says:

“To Realize fundamental Reality, one must set aside unnecessary activities, activities that are not fundamental to existence. Thus, when you go and sit in the Communion Hall, in time set apart for meditation, you are not there to engage in verbal-mind activity—just as you are not there to answer the telephone, engage in common activities, or duties associated with your daily responsibility. You do not presume you are going to be doing that. You set yourself apart from that for that period of time. Well, part of what should be set aside in that act is this verbal mind. It is unnecessary. It has a function that you choose to engage in under certain circumstances, but it is not inherent or necessary. In fact, unless you can set it aside, you become rather disturbed by it. Like a ringing in the ears, if you cannot stop thinking under any circumstances—at least get relieved of it in a normal way, just relax from that obsessive mind-activity—then it becomes a disturbance. It makes the human being unnatural, out of balance.

And, just as when you are in deep sleep there is no verbal mind activity, so when you enter into the Communion Hall, you must realize, by practice in My Divine Avataric Company, how to enter there and essentially leave the mind aside for a while—with your shoes, outside the door. You have no use for it in that time. You are not there to be thinking. You are there to collect the body-mind-complex into an attitude that sets itself apart from thinking for a time. But if you are addicted to it, it feels threatening (in a way) to have the verbal mind stop.

Every sensation of ‘not-thinking’ feels like unconsciousness to you. You feel threatened by anything that will stop your ability to persist in thinking. Well, that is a rather disturbed position to be in!

You should (instead) be in That Condition in Which it is Native, natural to you to be in a Free state, without any compulsion toward thought, any intrusion by thought at all, whenever you like, whenever you choose to be that way. In that case, it will not be at all disturbing to you to enter into much more profound in-depth investigation of ‘experiential’ awareness—because the verbal, thinking mind is rather peripheral, like peripheral physical sensations. So, to stop this rather peripheral, agitated, essentially survival-oriented activity of thinking, is to allow the body-mind-complex to be open, and to allow a deepening to occur. This is why thinking should be set aside—why it has no function basically in the Communion Hall.”

Adi Da goes on to Say:

“The deepening of the process I have Given you in My ‘Hridaya Rosary (Four Thorns of Heart-Instruction)’ opens the entire body-mind-complex to My Fullness. And, so, an aspect of that process, certainly in meditative Communion with Me, is a deepening awareness. And where there is this attitude of openness to My Infusion altogether, there is no verbal activity required. It does not happen. It quiets. It is not that quieting (in itself) is Realization, Enlightenment.

The quieting of the mind is (simply) quieting of the mind. It is a functional state—that is all—and not yet profound. It is part of the total attitude of the body-mind-complex that is the beginning of depth, the process in-depth, the ego-transcending practice in-depth. So it is no great thing, in itself. But, to one who is agitated compulsively to be thinking—which is typical of human beings these days—that is a big deal. So, getting to that point of responsibility in your devotional Communion with Me, where you have this kind of equanimity, is a significant form of maturing in the beginnings of the Reality-Way of Adidam.”  ~The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary
